In Relationships You Cannot Get Even
I am the world famous cocktail journalist Anna Väkeväinen - a recognized sipologist but mostly focusing on gonzo reportage. I'm so famous that sometimes replying to all the invitations and fan mail keeps me from doing the actual work: drinking. But I always get back on the track soon.
****************
Mr F. He is more than anyone else before: so smart, so funny. So We have been going out together for almost a month now. Literally: going out. We go to bars, drink, talk to people, have fun. But is party girl all he sees in me?
"He is not over her ex yet", diagnosed Hilkka, my little girlfriend the music journalist, whom I took to a cocktail at Grotesk. Oh yeah, the ex. And the separation just a couple of months ago.
As there was no cocktail menu, I decided for a safe bet: vodka margarita. Unfortunately, I mistakingly orderd a vodka martini. "With an olive?" asked the girl. I realized the terrible mistake but was too embarrased to correct it. Instead of wonderful sugary soury chilled treat, I was drinking the near straight lukewarm vodka. For Hilkka I bought the 30 something's favorite only second to Mojito: strawberry daiquiri.
Hilkka had just run into an ex who still owns her 200 euros. She desperately wants to get even.
"Darling, in relationships you don't get even. If you're losing, leave before you lose even more", I adviced.
For our delight, Star Boys entered the bar and began their show. The one holding the star was kind of cute, and afterwards, I secured his phone number for later use. I was thinking Mr T, and I was thinking revenge. If he doesn't take me seriously, why would I take him?
Star Boys left, but our dear friend Mss Z joined us. We decided to leave the place. I love cocktails, but cocktail bars can be tacky. I mean, how easy can soul music get? How well pressed can mens shirts be?
We headed for the exact opposite: rock bar Loose.
"Although I want money for myself", I said to the girls, "men who are lawyers and business men and so on do not turn me on."
Mss Z agreed."It's almost as if money is a turn off."
We spent the rest of the night drinking light beer and listening to heavy rock. Loose is ok, but still not the perfect bar.
"It's kind of like a chain bar for rock", observed Mss Z. True.
"At the moment, there is no perfect bar in Helsinki", she continued. Sad but true.
But Hilkka disagreed. There is. And that is where I will go next. But it's still a secret.
